Everyone has an ego which is built within a part of our mind that creates our sense of identity. Every time we say I am beautiful on consistent repeat; this is the identity we or the ego believes to be true which is then stored in our subconscious like a program.
The ego is driven by our desires and goals yet it can largely be dominated by fear, lack, desperation and doubt which in turn creates urges or impulses through the law of action that makes us behave in unhealthy ways.
However, the primary function of the ego was built for human survival and protection and over the years has evolved through social interaction and the media, for instance, pictures of beautiful and slender women being published which can bring inner turmoil and suffering when those doubts and lack pop into our heads over and over and on repeat which has lead to health conditions like anorexia. This is using scarcity tactics to advertise and make people think and get urges to do, be or buy.
When we are born, we are pure human beings up to the age of around 6 years old and depending on your upbringing, the environment and people who support/ influence you is dependent on whether you have a healthy or unhealthy ego.
An ego is constructed through life experiences, repetitive thoughts and social interaction and when we label ourselves and absorb the stories we say about who we are an identity is formed.
We can take two siblings, who have the same experience but tell a different story, one being happy and the other saying it wasn't and this is because we all have different perceptions of the same event which is filtered through the ego.
From my point of view the ego is a big part of mental health and I think children need the support more in this area than schools needing to get higher GCSE results in at least 9 different subjects that they are neither going to need or use. Children need support on how to navigate their thoughts and feelings so they can be resilient and thrive in life.
